Coplan's World

Outland has always been the name that I have given to my computer, which has always been my creative escape. The name aptly describes my interests and hobbies, which have little relation to each other. This website is about my hobbies and about my interests and what I choose to share with the world.

My name is D. Travis North, but you can call me Coplan. And welcome to my world.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - The Game

Games | Submitted by coplan: November 11, 2008 - 04:32 PM

Remember back when text adventure games were the best games available? Back in the days before high end graphics, text adventure games were about the best form of entertainment available. You could explore worlds in your mind - much in the way that you read books, except that you controlled it. Time and time again, text adventure games resurface - with some new features, mind you, but still the same in concept. The reason is simple: Modern games are regurgitation of old stuff. How many DOOM (first person shooter) clones are there? How many wanna-be-warcraft (combat strategy) games are there? There are original ideas...but they are few and far between. The text adventure, on the other hand, is just a new plot. You can accept the fact that it's the same as all the others because solving the puzzle is always different. It makes you think and therefore, it is fun.

Clinton's last Days

Development | Submitted by coplan: November 04, 2008 - 10:55 AM

As we come to the close of George W. Bush's tenure at Pennsylvania Avenue, discussions of past Presidents arise. As a reminder to all as to just how cool Bill Clinton - and staff - really were, I want to resurface a video he (and staff) created about his last days at the White House. It's quite funny. Somehow, I just don't think that we can expect the same from W.

Treasure Box

Development | Submitted by coplan: September 04, 2008 - 11:20 AM

Time for a little Monty Python meets Rube Goldberg (though, I think Monty Python animations are, in general, influenced by Rube Goldberg, so maybe that's a little redundant). Treasure Box is a puzzle game with some very stylized graphics where you have to figure out how to pass a ball from start to finish through a series of mini-puzzles. It's really not that hard, but fun to play.

Sling Jumper 2

Games | Submitted by coplan: July 15, 2008 - 11:52 AM

Sling Jumper 2, like its predecessor, is a fun puzzle game where you control a ball bouncing between slings on the screen while trying to achieve a specific goal (reach the portal). Early levels are fairly simple, but it gets challenging really quick. The physics in the game includes gravity, and you're restricted by all the forces that are acting upon your ball at all times. So sometimes you have to think a little in order to pass a specific level.

It's all fun and games:

Homemade Rollercoaster

Features | Submitted by coplan: June 20, 2008 - 11:55 AM

Pretty interesting video at Dig Your Own Grave about a man who built his own roller coaster in his back yard. It's not the Great American Scream Machine, but it's pretty cool. I'd ride on it.
